Gavilan Cashmere is located in beautiful secluded Gavilan, New Mexico on the Continental divide. Our herd of around 80 Cashmere goats free range this beautiful country three seasons out of the year, this produces hardy and healthy goats raised as naturally as possible.

Our Cashmere producing goats have been selectively bred for many years to produce fine soft stylish down for the use of making quality yarns for our Handwoven products, to have short spiky guard hair for ease of combing and cleaning and for hardy attributes and functional conformation. Our herd contains many different colored goats, White, Black, Silver, Gold, Brown, and Red and we are provided with an array of Cashmere colors including White, Light Grey, Dark Grey, Brown and Dark Brown.

We send our raw Cashmere to specialty mills to be spun into fine yarn, we keep back all of the Cashmere for use in our own products and although the demand for our quality Cashmere fiber is high we just can’t part with it. The mills love our Cashmere for how clean it is and we have often been told by the mills that our Cashmere is the best Cashmere in the USA and that it is superior to the Cashmere coming from Europe.

We do not show our goats, as we find that our own proof of quality comes from being involved in the entire Cashmere process “From goat to coat”. As fiber artists and livestock breeding enthusiasts, we know what we want to see coming from our goats. However, we feel that many of our goats would be well suited for the show ring because of good conformation and Cashmere style.

Cashmere wether Racer on the combing stand. Racer came out a wacky color by most Cashmere goat breeder standards but he was loved anyway for his friendly personality and fine Grey Cashmere. Racer has passed on and is missed at the barn.
